After ten years of reviewing San Francisco's hotels - we've seen everything from budget motels, not renovated since the 1960's -- to brand new hotels constructed with every luxury, and plans to sell hotel rooms to the public as condos.
Taking a look at San Francisco's top quality hotels - the kind that are $400 and up - how do you find the very best? We looked at the top luxury hotels in San Francisco to evaluate them based on:
- Value
- Service
- Location
- Reputation
- Hotel "frequent stay" points
Tripadvisor.com shows an average price over $400 for a very small subset of San Francisco hotels. The Top-Seven San Francisco hotels by price are:
- Four Seasons
- Ritz Carlton
- Mandarin Oriental
- Saint Regis
- Palace Hotel
- Intercontinental Mark Hopkins
- W San Francisco
We'll use this week's blog to discuss one Top-Cost hotel per day, and the pick our winner. Contestant number one - please take the stage -- the Four Seasons Hotel:
For just one month's apartment rent in Omaha, Nebraska - you can buy yourself one night at the Four Seasons Hotel for an average price of $550. Renowned hotels for their service quality - the San Francisco location is in the heart of the Market Street shopping corridor - right between the business financial district and Union Square shopping. The hotel also sells private residences. The elegant modern hotel's newer construction gives it great modern convenience - but perhaps lacking the historical charm of the Fairmont or Mark Hopkins on Nob Hill. Guests report great service overall and beautiful room decor. However, like anyone walking on San Francisco's Market Street -- unfortunately the homeless can be prevalent in the area. This is a superb luxury hotel and a strong contender for our top spot.
Tommorow's contestant -- the formidable Ritz Carlton.....

I was disappointed with the W when I stayed there a couple of years ago ... lots of noise in the hallways and the fitness room was under construction and unusable ... but the bridge view rooms at Hotel Vitale are hot!
